Instruction manuals for raising children are not really effective. When raising a child, it isn’t as important to avoid making any mistakes as it is to recognize mistakes and correct them – every day anew. In a time when debates about childrearing are often characterized by terms such as “state of emergency” or “catastrophe,” it is high time to remember the core values of parenting.

Taking the current discussions as her starting point, the author poses the question: what criteria might there be for “good parenting.” In her quest, she identifies five factors that promote children’s development: emotional warmth, esteem and respect, cooperation, structure and commitment, and all-around encouragement. In contrast to these, she also describes dimensions that hinder development, such as emotional coldness or overheating, disregard, rigidity, chaos and arbitrariness, and one-sided or lack of encouragement.

“We can take hope and courage,” the author writes, “in knowing that even in times of a state of educational emergency there is still excellent teaching and involved teachers as well as parents who enjoy parenting, show their children love and warmth, and feel a strong sense of responsibility.”
